Sam Bell doesn’t like the word disability. He says it doesn’t go close to defining him. After losing a leg to cancer as a young man, Sam has played sport, raised a family and run his own business. For his most recent challenge, Sam has recently taken up the sport of barefoot waterskiing and has dedicated hours of his time to being the best he can be. Through freezing cold winters, Sam has hit the water – working on perfecting his tricks and routines all in pursuit of his dream to qualify for the 2020 World Barefoot Skiing Championships.
We had numerous conversations with Sam in pre-production to narrow down his brief and what story it was he wanted to tell. He didn’t want to tell an ‘overcoming adversity’ story – he wanted it more to be about his dedication and passion and his motto ‘No Excuses’. We met him on a cold morning on the Illawarra River as he carved up the river, rain gradually getting heavier overhead. Sam has used the video in order to bring sponsors on board to bring him closer to his dream.
